AM VETS Post 2002, Corning, voted to be a sponsor to the unit. Several Marine Corps League members joined the Post and several of their members will become Associate members of detachment 1140. Together thee veterans will be directly involved with the Young Marines. It's a very good sign when members of each of the military services and members of the community all come together to be more involved with our youth. It's called mentoring.
Several members of the our unit became involved with the Tehama County Police Activities League and Department of Education Prevention Project to learn more and educate others about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, abuse, bullying, gangs and violence.
Tehama County is going to set the example for communities across the country about these dangers and what to do about them.
Together Everyone Achieves More!
Drill on Saturday, December 18. 2010, was really awesome! Dr. Monica Nandino, a dentist and mom of YM/LCpl GianCarlo Nandino, showed a video of some of the terrible things that can happen when using various drugs and also from lip piercing. This is what she has seen over her career in dentistry.
National Executive Director, Lt. Col. Mike Kessler, traveled to Red Bluff to award the Young Marines with the Unit of the Year award. Thanks to Mayor Jeff Moyer, members of the City Council, Board of Supervisors, Assemblyman Jim Nielson's, (R) office and House of Representative, 2nd District (R- CA) Wally Herger's office were also present.
Iwo Jima Marine Bud Gott gave a brief, but wonderful, speech to the audience. Mr. Gott was the subject of YM/GySgt Mary Hurton's essay for the Jimmy Trimble Scholarship award. Each year one male and one female Young Marine across the nation are chosen as winners. Mr. Kessler made the official announcement then that Mary won it this year and went to Guam in the Spring of 2011. Due to the tsunami the flight to Iwo Jima was canceled.
Last year, YM/MSgt Annie Bennett, (yes, our very own Annie), won the national scholarship award and also visited Guam and Iwo Jima. Oh, and by the way, Annie and Mary are cousins! Two winners from our unit, battalion, regiment and division in two years! Annie also served as the Regimental Sergeant Major for 2008/2009.
We're looking for a "few good men and women" to join us as registered adult volunteers. There are no paid personnel at any unit, battalion, regiment or division. We are an all volunteer force. We're looking for team players who understand that the Young Marines is not a military youth group, although we are affiliated with the Marine Corps and Marine Corps League.
Volunteers also understand that this program belongs to our youth, not any of us. This means that the Young Marines actually run their own program - as the players and the adult volunteers serve as their cheerleaders. Adult members are the coaches on the sidelines.
If you are interested in becoming an adult volunteer, registered with our National Headquarters in Washington, D. C., please email us at iusmcmike3zero@sbcglobal.net or call 530.419.3950. Please also remember that as volunteers we do have other commitments but we'll do our very best to return your email or call as soon as possible. We are volunteers and do the best we can with the people and resources available at any one time.
Several of us climbed Mt. Lassen to the peak a few months ago. We're talking a climb of more than 2,000 ft in less than two hours. Those who gave it their best attempt - 100% - were awarded the "I made it to the Top!" pin. It was windy, cold at the top, tiresome with only thin air, and that was just the fun part of it! The reward for this effort was the view. We'll be posting a photo soon. A story about this, by YM/GySgt Mary Hurton was published in the Fall edition of Esprit Magazine.
Registered Adult Leaders (RALs) D'Lorah Hurton, Yvette Borden and John Minton traveled to Irvine, CA (September 16 - 19, 2010) for the 6th Division UMC - Unit Management Course - provided by National Headquarters Staff. They learned more about the 1st Annual National Executive Director's Cup competition. The unit has their eye on that prize, too! More later.
Young Marine Gunnery Sergeant Chris Collins graduated from Advanced Leadership School on Friday, July 2, 2011 at Ft. Pickett, VA. He was number 6 out of 24 with a 97.5% on his final! Had he been able to squeak in as number 5 he would have been automatically invited to the annual Young Marine Symposium at Washington, D. C. If one of those five isn't able to attend maybe Chris will get an invitation.
The Ray Jacobs family in Redding donated some family mementos of Sgt. Ray Jacobs, including photos of Sgt. Jacobs on Mt. Surabachi. Then Pvt. Jacobs was present at the 1st Flag Raising - he's the Marine with the radio strapped to his back. We will get those photos attached to this web site very soon. Special thanks to Nancy and Mike Jacobs and family for the wonderful gift to the battalion.
The Inaugural Tehama County/California Regiment/6th Division Drug Demand Reduction conference was held Friday, February 19 - Sunday, February 21, 2011, at the State Capitol Building in Sacramento. Senior Young Marines from Washington, Oregon and California attended. Tehama County PAL was also represented and donated $250.00 for the conference. Red Bluff Police Association also donated $200.00. Copies of this DVD will be sent out to anyone who request so in writing. Cost is $5.00 to ship.
The Ray Jacobs Battalion of the Young Marines of the Marine Corps League, and Am Vets Post 2002 Corning are looking for a few more boys and girls, between the ages of 8 and 16, who want to make a commitment to a healthy lifestyle by claiming victory over drugs, alcohol, tobacco, abuse, bullying, gangs and violence. Our national motto is: "Strengthening the lives of America's youth."
We serve our communities by leading the fight in drug demand reduction efforts, attaining good grades in school and assisting in numerous community service projects.
(con't from above) Sgt. Ray Jacobs was the last surviving member of the 1st Flag Raising on Mt. Surabachi, Iwo Jima, 1945. He was in that photo of the first raising of our Colors, in the far left corner with a radio on his back. He served the Bay Area (KTVU) as a newsman for 40 years and died in 2008. He is buried at the Northern California Veterans Cemetery, Igo, in Shasta County. His soul reported to St. Peter and he is now guarding the Gates of Heaven.
His family is a huge supporter of the Young Marines and the Marine Corps League. They live in Redding and are an inspiration to us all.
The Young Marines is a national patriotic youth organization. They serve as the Color Guard at many veteran funerals, parades and for the 9/11 observance at the Tehama County Courthouse each year.
Debbie Allen lost her 17 year old daughter to alcohol poisoning and she and her husband, Steve, visit youth organizations to tell them about Shelby's Rule: "Secrets Kill." Visit www.shelbysrules.com for more information.
