We're always being asked where the Young Marines came from - the Young Marines of the Marine Corps League.
From the
National Executive Director
The Young Marines were started by a handful of Marines in 1959 who were also members of the Brass City Detachment of the Marine Corps League. The Young Marines were officially chartered by the MCL in a ceremony with General Wallace Green on October 17 1965 - hence, Young Marines of the Marine Corps League. In 1993 the Marine Corps chose the Young Marines to be their focal point on Youth Drug Demand Reduction Education. This stems from a pilot program started by the Department of Defense in that same year. Also that year, the Marine Corps drafted MCO 5000.20. This order authorizes bases, stations and installations to support the Young Marines on a not-to-interfere basis. The order remains valid but is currently being re-written in the form of a policy statement.
Today, the MCL plays a supporting role in that they are fully aware that while chartered by them, we do not have a legally binding requirement to report to them. We are a subsidiary, and that is all. Our relationship is strong at the National and Division levels. In some cases it is very strong at the detachment level.
Those that are successful are so because everyone works for the benefit of the kids (interesting concept!!).
Detachment 1140

Chain of Command
This is a work in progress because youth groups are "transient in nature." (Kids are gonna' come and go which we believe is mostly healthy).
Some contact information is provided herein. If using the chain of command to file a complaint and the complaint can not be resolved at the lowest level and the complainant desires to move to the next step that contact information will be provided at that time. Please be patient and adhere to these procedures.
